The Nightengale

The Nightengale

Carpe Diem #1314 The Nightingale

quatrain no. 72

Alas, that Spring should vanish with the Rose!
That Youth’s sweet-scented Manuscript should close!
The Nightingale that in the Branches sang,
Ah, whence, and whither flown again, who knows?

© Omar Khayyam (Tr. FitzGerald)

the glory of summer
swept away like autumn leaves
fragrant days gone

tipped in autumn frost
the last roses of summer
wither away

the nightingale’s song
vanishes with the moon
empty branches remain
