The dry dusty scent of the midway clings to every thing in the late afternoon heat. Beauty pageants with their talent displays compete against the rumble of the monster trucks and the call of the carnival hawkers. Occasional bands play against the roar of the tractor pull and the music of the rides. The midway is crowded with people in an explosion of poor clothing choices, jostling their way to the next ride. Their children laughing and some crying from all the over stimulation of excitement, noise and flashing lights. As the day closes the rides get brighter and the sound of teenagers becomes louder. One afternoon at the county fair has made me feel old.

carnival lights flash, music blares,
singers croon
